Diorama No.3 : The Marchland is the third installment in the ‘shoebox diorama’ series created by Daniel Ernst.
What is Diorama No.3 : The Marchland?
Diorama No.3 : The Marchland is a virtual reality artwork. You, as the audience, step into a VR experience based upon the concept of the shoebox diorama. While in reality - and initially in VR - these are low-tech school projects made with tape and old junk, Ernst’s quickly transcend this medium and become vignettes into a powerful artistic world. In Diorama No.3 : The Marchland you are presented with a toll booth, eerily isolated from its surrounding. Rain pours and creates illusions and ghost-like apparitions to enter the world. The experience is one which evokes emotion quite palpably, and is in this sense a real achievement for the medium of VR.

Virtual reality might be thought of as primarily about playing games in a new way, but that needn’t be the limit of the technology. Just as television or cinema span genres like action, documentaries or the arts, there is no reason VR cannot do the same. Ernst’s work in this shoebox diorama project pushes the boundaries of what VR can do into the world of art.
